Broadway’s Black Mother: Eisa Davis



There is a fantastic article about portraying black motherhood on Broadway in today’s New York Times. Eisa Davis plays Mother in the musical “Passing Strange.”

The character of Mother was appealing, she said, because she is a departure from the all-knowing, long-suffering black-mother stereotype. “This mother character is not the magical Negro at all,” said Ms. Davis. “She is flawed, she is selfish, she is trying to live by the rules and is being squashed by them and has put all of her dreams into this child, and of course he can’t fulfill them.”
